Our Commitment to Reconciliation

Tumut Community Preschool is committed to empowering children to respect and acknowledge the unique cultures of Australia’s First Nations peoples. We celebrate with children the connection that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have to County and thank them each day for the opportunity to live and learn on the Land with them.

We will continue to respectfully embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives in our curriculum with the vision of building and deepening genuine, respectful relationships with all children and all families of all cultures. We believe that connection to the First Nations community is essential for children to create their sense of belonging and inclusion.

We are committed to our Reconciliation action plan that will continue to guide our preschool on our journey towards harmony and provide an environment where all children can respectfully immerse themselves in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

We recognise the cultural rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and are strongly committed to developing a deeper understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of knowing and learning by continuing to appropriately integrate cultural perspectives and Wiradjuri language within all aspects of our preschool.

Our commitment to a reconciled community is based on five interrelated dimensions of race relations, equality and equity, institutional integrity, unity and historical acceptance

  • Tumut Community Preschool drafted their first Reconciliation Action plan in 2016.

  • Staff regularly attend the Reconciliation Symposium which is held each year.  We have had staff attend in various locations including Darwin, the Gold Coast, Sydney, Hobart and Fremantle.

  • In 2019 we opened our Reconciliation Garden (buwanha maldhanhagu - Grow to provide).

  • Recipients of a Ninganah No More grant to facilitate a Wiradjuri Language Program with input from local elders.

  • Holding regular celebrations each year for cultural events of significance (eg, Naidoc week, National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Children's Day, Reconciliation Week).

  • Cherishing a bond with our local elders and inviting them into our service regularly.

  • In 2021, Tumut Community Preschool were very proud joint winners of the Narragunnawali Awards - Early Learning Category.
